This Thursday, from 7:00-8:30 pm at Surfrider Headquarters (see map), we will be conducting a Volunteer Orientation meeting. We will be explaining our strategy, distributing information and providing you with a variety of options to help us to shut down SONGS until lessons learned from Fukushima have been addressed. If you are unable to attend but wish to be added to our volunteer list please reply to this email. Otherwise just show up at the Ocean Festival on Sunday morning (beginning at 7:00 am) to help us build our sand sculpture replicas of the two domes and the little tsunami wall which is sure to come down at high tide.

Between now and September 27th, when the city holds a public hearing on the ?lessons learned?, we will be making an all out campaign to raise public awareness of the nuclear threat we live so close to. The fact that we know there is a huge earthquake overdue and that there are so many problems at this 2nd most dangerous nuclear power plant in the USA, makes this a real emergency. The time it will take to actually shut down the plant only increases the likelihood that we will be exposed to deadly radiation on top of dealing with the other devastating effects of an 8.0 shaker. We must act decisively and cohesively.

The immense powers that insist on maintaining the status quo for profit can only be countered by the power of the people concerned about safety first. If you can?t donate time, then donate treasure to help pay for our expenses. Our outreach efforts are limited by our funds, so if you know of anyone that has the means to help in a big way, this is when it is most critical to have their support, although any donations are much appreciated. All we can do is provide the mechanism for change. It is up to each one of us to do what we can to anticipate the disaster that is just waiting to happen. Please help us to help others who do not yet realize the extreme danger we are expected to live with for a mere 7.5 % of our energy needs.

?Thanking? us for doing something about this critical situation is nice, but we won?t succeed without your help. It is up to each of us to do what we can, and to do it right now. Time is of the essence.

Thank you,
