We had our first “Community Garden” project get started on Saturday
morning, August 15th at 9:30 AM with our kick-off event. In the near future SCG
Volunteers will be helping out The Henderson House, (a transitional facility
for those in need of a fresh start in life), to put in their very own garden
with fruit trees and vegetables. What is most unique about this community
garden is that the food produced by this garden will not only be raised for
and by the Henderson House Residents, but it will also be shared with others
in the neighborhood. This promises to be a very positive element to be
introduced to the Los Mares community, a neighborhood facing many difficult
circumstances and hardships. This was just a fun event to come out and meet
the people we will be working with, show them the plan that is attached
here, and get their feedback prior to actually doing the work. There was a
a street party and BBQ lunch at 11:30 provided by the city along with some
home cooked favorites contributed by the neighborhood. Mayor Donchak
also attended.
